What are the future applications for VoIP in use today?
Has Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) finally found its place with today’s smart phones and social networking? With the development of the smart phones and their accompanying apps VoIP has not always been openly encouraged if not outright forbidden. It also has not been common place on social networking sites either although one may think that this ease of “reaching out” a natural fit. However, it has been just the opposite. Until very recently AT&T has not permitted VoIP applications like Skype and Fring to use its cellular data connection on the iPhone. However, the change of policy now allows iPhone users to access these apps. This may have been a reaction to increase demand particularly from those users that have been tied to the international calling plans. In addition to using Skype and Fring applications on other smart phones Adaptive Digital Technologies (Adaptive Digital) announced the availability of two complete suites of VoIP voice engine software for Android mobile devices, anVoip and anVoice. With the availability of this software Google’s Android based mobile devices can take advantage of being as “open” as Google may have intended.
8×8 Inc. has recently announced the release of “8×8 Connect.” The “8×8 Connect” application is as simple as a click of the mouse to connect via VoIP on Facebook. This application allows Facebook users to add a “Call Me” button on to their profile page that allows “friends” to call them without ever having knowledge of their phone number. This ingenious application asks the person making the call to enter the number the call will come from and it will allow the “Call Me” user to be rung at the number they have previously entered. This allows the next step of social networking while also maintaining a degree of anonymity by not provide a phone number to the caller.
VoIP applications are finally available to the people that use them most – those that make use of smart phone technology and social networks.
